Need < Want

Benjamin Franklin once famously said, ‘Our necessities never equal our wants.’ It is a profound truth. Most of us spend our lives trying to balance this equation, yet we almost always find that our wants far outweigh our needs.

Although we often treat these two words as synonyms, their true meanings are vastly different. A 'need' is a fundamental necessity—something required for survival, without which we cannot function. A 'want,' however, is a much broader term; it describes a desire for something that, while appealing, we could ultimately live without.

Consider food as an example. We need nourishment to survive, but we do not need to overindulge or hoard more than our bodies require. Feeding ourselves is a need; consuming excessively is a want. To find true balance, we should learn to pursue things only when they are truly necessary, rather than simply because we desire to have them.
